Beyond You Club encourages compassionate eating
On Wednesdays, Serra students passionate about animals, the environment, and healthy eating enjoy homemade snacks, from cupcakes to banana bread at Beyond You Club.
The club, which meets in room 227, aims to encourage students to embrace a healthier, compassionate lifestyle by incorporating plant-based eating into their diet.
Senior Chloe Rosero, president of the club, founded it in November. She wants Beyond You Club to be a place where everyone can learn more about how to support the environment, animal welfare, and their own health through being more conscious of their eating.
At a typical meeting, Rosero goes over a different aspect of plant based eating and serves homemade vegan goods. However, she tries to maintain a balance between education, motivation, and community.
“My favorite part about the club is the people,” said senior Cameron Britt, “Vegan club attracts a friendly and positive group.”
Rosero herself has been vegan for over a year. She began learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet while competing in both track and dance, and was motivated to continue as she learned about animal ethics.
“I felt it was unfair that I just kept it to myself,” Rosero said.
While the majority of club members are omnivorous, Rosero said, “A few of them have incorporated some habits for eating more vegetarian and a lot of them have become more conscious.”
Senior Camila Rodriguez is a member of the club who recently went vegetarian in order to reduce her carbon footprint and support animal welfare. “I joined because I wanted to learn how my diet choices impact myself and others,” Rodriguez said.
For those who are considering adopting a plant-based diet, Rosero recommends they identify a motivation, and to have an open mind. “When you close yourself off and say ‘Oh I can’t do it, I’m not going to be able to hang out with everyone, I’m going to be protein deficient,’ you cut yourself off from the things you can benefit from,” she said.
She suggests searching online for resources to make the transition easier. The club account, @ccompassionfruit on Instagram, posts club announcements, motivational quotes, tips, and facts about compassionate eating, as well as Rosero’s own culinary creations.
“It definitely gives me a lot of purpose,” Rosero said.
