The video game market is one of the largest in the world. With a revenue of over 100 billion dollars a year, video games prove to be successful and popular amongst the world. What does the future of video games look like?
The answer may lie in the realm of Virtual Reality. Virtual reality games or VR games are a fresh take on the video game genre. They provide a more interactive experience for the user by making them feel more invested in the world around them.
The player puts on a headset and the screen is displayed directly on their face and use their hands to move around the Virtual Environment. Many students are interested in Vr gaming and are positive in its future like senior Angelo Bautista who said “VR is the stepping stone for progression of video games, and will lead to the success of the gamers.”
Since VR is such a new phenomenon, only gaining traction around 2017, there is still a lot to be done in order to perfect it. A lot of reports of problems with the Oculus Rift and Playstation vr are very common with connectivity issues and ridiculous internet speeds required to run properly, turning off some potential buyers. The equipment is also expensive, with the Oculus Rift retailing at $399 and playstation vr currently priced at $350.
One of these concerned players is senior Aspyn Schoen who stated “It's too expensive for me and it made me motion sick, even though the games are fun, it's not worth it for me.”
If the consumer can get around the fact that it's a new technology and take the risk, they can find themselves immersed in games such as “Beat Saber”and “Superhot VR”. These games make the risks worth it. One such gamer is senior Kylan Huynh. “This is something I would buy, VR is fun and it's the next generation.” VR is proving itself a worthy contender for the future of video games, becoming a titan of the industry however, is up to the players.
