Trends of the year: Popeye's chicken sandwich
Popeye’s chicken sandwich has been the craze of early August had a resurgence in their sales due to them coming back. The sandwich was a major competitor with Chick-Fil-A's own chicken sandwich. It proved to be a serious competitor, as demonstrated by its rapid sales.
The sandwich has recently been re-released on November 3rd, 2019, and has lines spanning down roads and parking lots. However, mixed opinions have been issued across multiple Popeye’s across the country.
On November fifth a fatal stabbing occurred over the sandwich. This is the third incident that has been reported since the craze began.
This trend of limited-time-only foods has always been ongoing, for example: the McDonald’s szechuan sauce in 2018, Burger King’s impossible whopper, vegan sandwiches, and a variety of deep fried foods just to name a few.
Senior Jose Velez said, “Chick-Fil-A has is better all around, but Popeyes has the quality of the chicken they use for the sandwich.”
According to QRS Magazine, Popeye’s made an estimated sixty-five million dollars off the first few days. Previous trends have sold out in a day or hours after, only for people to riot about wanting those food items back.
Though these items carry lots of fanfare for those wanting the item back, these items never become permanent items on the menu. This is due to the lack of supplies and ingredients to keep a steady stock of the food item, demonstrated by the chicken sandwich being off the menu for months at a time to restock.
Only time will tell what new food tend will come about in the industry, but one thing is for sure: it won’t end for a long time.
