Greta Thunberg makes waves as youth climate activist

Greta Thunberg is a sixteen year old female climate change activist from Sweden. Thunberg became famous at age fifteen when she would miss school days in the Swedish Parliament to protest for a school strike on climate change.

Other students started to get a drift of what Greta Thunberg was trying to protest, and would engage in similar protests in their own communities. Senior Logan Williams said, “I heard about Greta Thunberg, from Mr. Devore when he told us about how a 15 year old girl sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Sweden to talk to the UN about Climate.”

By coming to the United States from Sweden by boat due to the fumes that the planes release off into the air, Greta came to the U.S. to speak with the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference. It made people aware of this Climate Strike and it encouraged several other schools to participate in the Global Climate Strike walkout. Serra High School was one of these very schools that participated in the demonstration.

Greta Thunberg is well known for her upfront, blunt, speaking manner. As for her age she speaks her opinions to the political leaders and assemblies about how the world needs to take action now about what she calls the “Climate Crisis” happening in today’s world. She also has Aspergers, making her a unique activist voice in the climate debate.

Her sudden rise to world fame has made her both a leader and a target. In May 2019, Thunberg was featured on the cover of Time magazine, which named her a "next generation leader" and noted that many see her as a role model, and someone who is bringing awareness to an issue that our generation needs to improve on.

Others think that this is a waste of time and don’t believe in climate change or believe it’s an issue we can get a handle on. Senior Bianca Fernandez disagrees with those people. “I started seeing her on the news and social media a lot. I think it’s good because it shows that younger people care about society and their futures.” In all Thunberg is bringing awareness to the United Nations and to society as a whole about serious climate issues, and how they will affect the future generations in particular.
